Sunlight Through Glassc
Mindell describes his creativity as observation based. “My eye is drawn to the most normal scenes, objects and faces. But I notice things that connect to me.” The reflections on a pair of glasses, the shadows falling diagonally from an overhang, the patterns of light and dark from a row of houses become a visual event, alive enough for him to spend months working with, he says.
"When a piece is successful, the visual event that made the composition work in my head, is the event that shows most prominently on the page. This is sometimes a surprise, in that I get lost in the details during the months of work." At its heart, Mindell says, drawing and painting isn't about drawing and painting, it is about seeing.
